The British Museum

The oldest museum in the world is a mecca for historical enthusiasts everywhere. It has something for everyone. The museum was started by the physician Sir Hans Sloane in 1753. It houses the finest collection of archaeological and historic artefacts in the world, including pieces from cultures all over the globe. The size of the exhibition is overwhelming. The British Museum contains a vast collection of treasures spanning 2 million years of world history and civilization. Expect to spend a whole day there. With more that 6,000 historical objects from around the world, the British Museum houses one of the world's greatest collections of antiquities including the Parthenon Frieze (also know as the Elgin Marbles after Lord Elgin relieved the Greeks of them), the Rosetta Stone and the Roman Portland Vase. The museum is worth a visit alone just to see the Great Court's incredible Norman Foster-designed undulating glass roof covering two acres, which was opened in 2000. Despite some of the more familiar exhibits having been collected from abroad, the museum also contains many important British historical artefacts. The Romano-British Gallery has a superb collection of statues, mosaics, jewellery and house and tableware. With over 90 galleries displaying treasures from Egypt, Greece, Rome, China and the Far East amongst others, there are many wonderful things to see for both adults and children.
