The London Eye
When in London do not miss this attraction. From a distance the London Eye appears to be a giant ferris wheel on the London horizon. It is the largest observation wheel in the world measuring 135 meters high. Offering the best views of London, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and the meandering Thames are all visible. On a clear day Windsor Castle, over 25 miles away, can be seen. Having just been opened in 2000, the London Eye in a short time, has proved itself to be one of the city's most spectacular and popular tourist attractions. The wheel itself has 32 capsules, each with the capability of accommodating 225 people making the total capacity of the wheel 1600 per hour. Each flight on the wheel lasts 30 minutes. The creators are husband and wife architect s David Marks and Julia Barfield, who has come up with the idea for a competition to design a landmark for the millennium. Then competition was cancelled but they were determined to pursue their idea. Over 1700 people in 5 different countries were involved in its construction. As well as being one of the most unusually striking structures in the world it offers a great panorama of the city. Also available is a fantastic Thames cruise departing from the river pier just below the Eye. This trip takes in the most famous bridges and buildings that line the banks of London's River Thames.
