The Tower of London
If you want to see the Tower of London, try to get there early. From mid-day onwards it can get very busy. If you intend visiting any later, book tickets in advance as you could have to spend a long time queuing. Take a guided tour and have your photograph taken with one of the Beefeaters in one of the world's most famous fortified buildings. While some of the walls date from Roman times the Tower itself was founded in 1078 by William the Conqueror. During the building's 900 year history it has served as a palace, prison, treasury, place of execution and a zoo amongst other things. One of the most famous stories associated with the tower is that of the ravens. Legends state that if they ever leave the Tower the Monarchy will be no more. To ensure that these 8 birds remain, they have their wings clipped by their very own Ravenmaster. Be sure to visit The White Tower where Anne Boleyn was imprisoned and beheaded in 1536. The Bloody Tower where Walter Raleigh and his wife were locked up. On the wall of The Beauchamp Tower you can see detailed stone carvings made by the prisoners whiling away the years. Walk along the defensive walls as they offer great views of the River Thames. Today the Tower also houses the Crown Jewels. A permanent exhibition describes the evolution of Royal Crowns in Britain.
