Introduction to London

Where do you start when you try to describe London? It's an amazing city. Dr Johnson wrote:
"when a man is tired on London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford"
Dr. Johnson wrote these words in the 18th century and they still ring true today. The host of attractions that this city has cannot be condensed into a short article. One of the best things that you can do is just wander and let the city discover you. London is a thoroughly modern city that blends the squalor of it's Victorian past alongside the grandeur of stately homes and palaces to come up with a unique and quirky atmosphere. It has got everything from world class shopping to new attractions like the London Eye. If you are looking for history and culture, it's got that too, ranging from the city's Roman origins and Palladian buildings to the Brit-art culture of the 1990's advocated by artists such as Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin. London has the greatest concentration of major attractions in Britain and boasts four World Heritage Sites. 238 attractions that are free to enter, so there's nowhere else in the world where you can see so much for so little. There are also a huge variety of entertainments to choose from. If you want to laze around London's pubs and restaurants, take in a concert of one of London's five symphony orchestras, visit the opera or see a rock band, it's all available. Don't forget the theatre. With the recent trend for big Hollywood stars appearing in West End productions, chances are that you can get to see some of your favourite stars up close. The city is so enormous; visitors will need to make the most of the underground train system. Unfortunately these prohibit the visitor from seeing the sights, so make sure that you include a ride on a red double-decker bus to get an idea of the geography of the city.
